PRINCE OWUSU: GHANA FOOTBALL’S NEW “PRINCE”
From the Medeama Soccer club into the Ghana Black Stars, a new 'Prince' just made his debut.
Prince Owusu, an attacking midfielder, starred in his first match, also his first call-up when the Black Stars took on Central African Republic in a World Cup African Qualification fixture on 10th October. This was the Ghana's National team final squad for the last round of games for qualification into next year's FIFA World Cup to be held in North America.
Prince Owusu was one of two players called up by Coach Otto Addo, alongside OGC Nice player Kojo Peprah Oppong. At just 21 years of age, both are exciting new prospects for the future of national football.
Prince Owusu first began his professional career for Kotoko Babies, where he later moved to Koforidua Suhyen, and then in July 2024, joining First Division club Meadeama SC.
Medeama, in a proud gesture, announced their new signing on all their socials. "We are pleased to announce the signing of Prince Owusu, a talented 19-year-old attacking mildfielder formerly of Koforidua Suhyen Sporting Club. Prince joins us on a three-year contract, bringing his skills and potential to the mauve and yellows. "
A new feat marked in the life of Prince, he began showing what he is capable of. Prince has been exceptional in the Ghana Premier League.
His performance in the league game against Nations FC was a major contribution to his call-up, where he was watched and assessed by Coach Otto Addo who paid a visit to watch the game and perhaps scout the player himself.
In that match, Prince Owusu, playing full 90 minutes, showed great potential. Though he missed a goal scoring opportunity from a very horrific setpiece, he later on scored a marvellous goal from outside the box, which zoomed straight into the bottom corner of the opposition post, doubling and securing the lead for his team.
Fast forward, Coach Otto Addo names him in his 25-man squad to face the Central African Republic at Stade Municipal in Oujda, in the nation's penultimate game for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Prince Owusu, in a gesture of appreciation, took to his socials and, in a video, said: "My name is Prince Owusu, I am from Kumasi, I started my career at Kotoko Babies, and from there I went to Koforidua Suhyen, and now Medeama SC. I am an attacking midfielder, and this year, by the grace of God, I have been called up by the Ghana Black Stars. I thank all Ghanaians for the call-up, and I promise to glorify them, I would not disappoint. Thank you."
Popularly known as Kwadwo Messi, Prince Owusu woke up to a new dawn making his national debut, coming on as a substitute to Tottenham Hotspur star Mohammed Kudus. Five Star Ghana scored five unanswered goals against the Central African Republic. The 0-5 victory on Wednesday crowned a historic campaign for the Black Stars and a special debut for the birthday celebrant, Prince Owusu.
Videos of 6 years old Prince Owusu wearing an FC Barcelona shirt juggling a ball on a pitch resurfaced on the internet as Ghanaian netizens reacted to the video and some compared his growth from kick ups to a national team outing. Some say it is proof of his determination to see his career into the light.
Ghana would go on to beat Comoros by a goal to nil and close their campaign with qualification into the World Cup. This call-up is indeed a breakthrough and just only the beginning for the 21 year old.
